About the Show

THE WELCOMING PARTY

2017 Manchester International Festival

How do we welcome new arrivals? What stories have they to tell?

Come and join The Welcoming Party and journey through a hidden warehouse at the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester.  You will walk alongside people who have travelled from towns and cities far beyond Manchester, all looking for a place where they can feel safe and sound.

A beautiful blend of installation, live music, puppetry and dance, The Welcoming Party is for children aged 8 plus and adults and invites you to think about what it means different – and why we should all be proud of who we are.

Co-commissioned by Manchester International Festival, Theatre-Rites, Z-Arts and the Ruhrtriennale Festival.

"This is, no two ways about it, an astonishing piece of theatre: a kids' show that handles immigration, both as lived experience and as bureaucratic system, with such nuance and sophistication that it teaches adults a thing or two as well"

Theatre-Rites will be part of this year's Manchester International Festival

The Welcoming Party is our new site-specific production and is co-commissioned by Manchester International Festival, Theatre-Rites, Z-Arts and the Ruhrtriennale Festival.

The Welcoming Party marks 21 years since Theatre-Rites' created Houseworks, a site-specific production that altered notions of what immersive art for children could be.  On this special birthday, as we celebrate the power of theatre to allow us all to reflect on the world around us, it is fitting that The Welcoming Party is our first collaboration as an Associate of Z-Arts, Manchester's dedicated venue for children and families.

"Sometimes a theatrical idea and a venue come together in such a profound way as to add a whole new dimension to the piece in question. Such is the case with The Welcoming Party,"
- Kids in Museums
"This is all pretty grown-up stuff, and is done with the rackety swagger and invention that we’ve come to expect from Theatre-Rites, a company making shows for children that is right at the forefront of contemporary British theatre practice"."
